New Air Conditioner and Furnace Installation

New A/C and Furnace Considerations

So you’ve chosen your new air conditioning or furnace unit, based on the size of your home, the energy source you’d prefer to use and the proven track record of the unit’s manufacturer. Now you’ve got to get it installed. Furnaces should only be installed by a licensed professional – it’s legally mandated in most places. And unless you’ve got some serious experience and skills, you’ll want to hire a contractor to install your air conditioning unit, as well.

Here are some issues to consider when going over installation options.

  • Location – The location of air compressors can make a world of difference. Ideally, an air conditioner’s compressor will be placed in a shaded area, away from heat sources like dryer exhaust vents, to maximize cooling efficiency. If possible, compressors should also be placed away from areas of the home where excess noise might be bothersome. A unit situated in a centralized location will provide better overall distribution of air, and installing it on brackets or bars slightly above the ground will improve air circulation and efficiency.

  • Ducting – If you’re building a new home, you may be installing ductwork for your heating or cooling unit. Discuss ideal routing and insulation options with your contractor, taking into account which rooms will need the most temperature regulation. If you aren’t installing central air now but may do so in the future, adding ductwork upfront is usually thousands of dollars cheaper than doing so after the home is already built.

  • Timing – If you have the luxury of waiting, you may want to try to install your new system when you least need it, during off-peak months. You might get a lower rate by installing A/C during the winter, a furnace during the summer, or both together during the spring. If you can install both at once, you’ll save a lot of money on installation costs and may be able to get a significant price cut on your air conditioning unit.

  • Efficiency – Consult your local utility company - you may be eligible for a rebate if you install an energy efficient furnace. And of course, a more efficient unit can save you hundreds on utility bills.

Climate control systems are a major investment. Choosing the right products and getting them properly installed is crucial for the livability and long-term market value of your home.
