Window A/C Unit - Install
Window A/C Unit Installation Considerations
- Capacity – The size of the room or rooms to be cooled will determine the capacity needed for a window air conditioning unit. Getting too strong a unit will lead to electrical waste and possible early damage due to constant powering on and off.
- Power source - The power outlet for the unit must be close enough for the cord to reach and powerful enough to support the unit. Most units will operate on a standard 120V outlet, but others require up to 240V.
- Installation - Window installation is a fairly simple task that many homeowners will be able to accomplish on their own. Through-the-wall installation, however, may require the aid of a professional contractor. When choosing a window in which to install your unit, be sure the window and frame are sturdy enough to support the unit and capable of bearing supporting hardware such as metal brackets and mounting rails, if necessary.
- Security - A window unit that can be easily removed is a potential entry-place for burglars. If the unit is installed in an accessible first floor window, additional security measures, such as ornamental steel bars, may be a wise investment.
When installing a unit in a window, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The unit must be well secured and kept free of obstructions. It should be slightly tilted so that condensation will run off appropriately. Any leveling shims or other supporting objects should be independently secured, as well. Regular replacement of the air filter and other routine maintenance may be required.
